Gaydon,
Warwickshire: Monday 25 June - Land Rover has launched a limited
edition Defender inspired by the most anticipated live-action
adventure film of 2001 - Tomb Raider.
The Defender
Tomb Raider LE is based on the specially modified vehicle driven
in the film by Academy Award winning Angelina Jolie, who plays
the hard-hitting heroine Lara Croft.
Only 250 Defender
Tomb Raider LEs will be produced. All feature eye-catching styling
details that make the iconic Defender even more distinctive and
complement its position as the ultimate off-road vehicle.
Mike Wright,
managing director of Land Rover UK, commented: "The Tomb
Raider LE will appeal to active drivers looking for a vehicle
that delivers serious fun as well as off-road performance."
Available
as a Defender 90 Station Wagon or 110 Double Cab, Tomb Raider
LEs are exclusively available in Bonatti grey and feature extensive
chequer-plate body cladding to reflect the Defender's go-anywhere
ability and rugged appeal. Further exterior styling cues fitted
as standard are a roof rack with support bar, pewter grey 'Boost'
alloy wheels, spotlights, rear step, side protection rails and
a unique Tomb Raider plaque.
The interior
of the vehicle is equally individual. Specially commissioned fabric
covers on the seats, the steering wheel is leather covered. A
chequer-plate floor, designed to be practical and stylish, echoes
the vehicle's exterior detailing, while an aluminium steering
guard and polished aluminium gear knob provide finishing touches.
Powering the
Defender Tomb Raider LE is Land Rover's acclaimed Td5 turbo diesel
engine. It combines strong performance, tractability and refinement
to provide a flexible package both on and off-road.
Five cylinders
and a high-pressure Electronic Unit Injector (EUI) system assist
the Td5 engine to develop impressive power - 122 PS and a maximum
torque of 300Nm at 1950 rpm. Electronic Traction Control (ETC)
and ABS are available as options on the Defender.
These
features together control the torque loss from spinning wheels
and govern the vehicle's braking system to slow and stop the vehicle
safely - providing improved traction.
Mike Wright
added: "We recognise that while all Defender drivers possess
a spirit of adventure, they are also individuals. The eye-catching
Tomb Raider LE allows owners to express their individuality while
also meeting their motoring needs - however extreme."
Priced at
£22,995 (roughly. $33,000 USD at time of print) and £23,995
(roughly. $34,000 USD at time of print) respectively, the 90 Station
Wagon and 110 Double Cab pick-up versions of the Defender Tomb
Raider LE go on sale in showrooms across the UK from 6 July 2001.
