Winning
praise from owners and magazines alike, Jeep® Liberty
will continue to delight customers with new features for
2004. Liberty clearly stands apart among car-based sport-utilities
in terms of capability, as well as truck-based offerings
in terms of on-road refinement.
For
2004, Chrysler Group’s hands-free in-vehicle
communication system, UConnect, is available as a factory-installed
option on the Jeep Liberty. Integrated into Liberty’s
electrical system, UConnect uses Bluetooth™ technology
to link the user’s personal mobile phone with the
vehicle, enabling the phone audio to be heard through the
radio speakers. The hands-free system microphone, voice
recognition interface and phone button are housed in the
rearview mirror. The user’s mobile phone may then
be placed anywhere within the vehicle. Conversations may
be continued upon entering or exiting, without disrupting
the call.
Another new feature on Liberty for 2004 is the power accessory
delay feature that maintains electrical power for 10 minutes
after the key is removed from the ignition or the front
door is opened.
For
2004, the Jeep Liberty’s rear
cargo area is made even more efficient with the available
new cargo organizer.
The foldable cargo organizer is stored flat when not in
use, and opens to a shelf with compartment dividers to
keep packages in place.
In addition, Jeep Liberty Renegade standard equipment
includes new rock rail protection and black accent bodyside
moldings for 2004. For 2004, Jeep Liberty gets a passenger
side, instrument panel-mounted grab handle.
Two new color options for all 2004 Liberty models are
Deep Molten Red and Timberline Green.
Jeep
Liberty continues to receive recognition from various
key external quality metrics, in terms of
overall reliability
and customer satisfaction. These high satisfaction and
quality ratings are backed by Chrysler Group’s seven-year/70,000-
mile powertrain warranty and exceptional internal quality
ratings that have been benchmarks for the corporation.
“
Combine the refined on-road handling of Jeep Liberty with
4x4 capability, superior towing ability and sophisticated
interior and it’s easy to see why our Liberty owners
are nominating us for awards,” said Jeff Bell, Vice
President — Jeep, DaimlerChrysler Corporation.
A GROWING LIST OF SAFETY FEATURES
To
complement the already long list of safety highlights
on the Jeep Liberty, three new safety
features added for
2004 are the Enhanced Accident Response System, BeltAlert™ and
tire pressure monitoring system.
The Enhanced Accident Response System (EARS) gives customers
an added level of safety and security through the electrical
control system in the event of an accident. The EARS automatically
unlocks doors and illuminates interior courtesy lights
five seconds after the deployment of the front or side
air bag, and the fuel pump shuts off immediately. Standard
on all Liberty models, this system increases ease of entry/exit
from the vehicle along with improved visibility for occupants
and drivers at night.
The
2004 Jeep Liberty also features as standard equipment
BeltAlert™, DaimlerChrysler’s
new enhanced seat belt reminder system. If a vehicle
is driven without
the driver being properly belted, the system will periodically
activate a chime and illuminate a light in the instrument
cluster to remind the driver to buckle up. The driver should
then instruct all occupants to buckle up as well.
Offered
for the first time on Jeep Liberty, the tire pressure
monitoring system is included in Liberty’s
overhead Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC).
The monitoring
system will display individual tire pressures in the EVIC
for all four rotating tires, and display a warning message
when the tire pressures fall below or exceed the set thresholds.
The spare tire pressure is monitored and a warning message
will indicate high/low pressure for the spare tire, but
not a specific tire pressure. The available tire pressure
monitoring system is offered on Renegade and Limited models.
When
developing the Liberty, Jeep engineers used the latest
computer technology to design, analyze
and refine Liberty’s
structural framework. This approach to safety helped Jeep
Liberty earn the government’s highest side and driver
front safety ratings. The National Highway Traffic and
Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued Jeep Liberty side
impact ratings of 5/5 star and frontal crash ratings of
5/4 star.
Other
safety features on Jeep Liberty include standard multi-stage
driver and passenger front air bags,
which
are designed to deploy at different levels depending on
the severity of the impact, available ABS and structural
foam in the headliner to protect occupants. Available side
curtain air bags offer additional protection for both front
and rear outboard occupants. Jeep Liberty also features
a seat belt pretensioner in the driver’s position,
and constant force retractors for both driver and front
passenger. These keep occupants securely in place while
letting out the belt webbing in a controlled manner in
the event of an accident to prevent the seat belt from
tightening too firmly and causing injury.
POWERFUL PERFORMANCE
Under
the hood of the fun-to-drive Liberty is the available
3.7-liter Power Tech V-6 engine, similar in architecture
to the highly acclaimed 4.7-liter V-8 engine powering
the award-winning Jeep Grand Cherokee. Rated at 210 horsepower
(157 kW) at 5,200 rpm and 235 lb.-ft. (319 N•m)
of torque at 4,000 rpm, Liberty offers abundant engine
performance to match its world-class design. The 3.7-liter
is mated to the smooth-shifting NV3550 five-speed manual
transmission or an available four-speed automatic. When
equipped with the automatic transmission and the trailer
tow group, this engine provides tow capability of 5,000
lbs. that is unmatched in the segment.
Jeep
Liberty Sport features the 2.4-liter Power Tech I-4 with
the NV1500 five-speed manual transmission
as standard
equipment. The 2.4-liter engine is rated at 150 horsepower
(112 kW) at 5200 rpm and 165 lb.-ft. (224 N•m) of
torque at 4000 rpm.
JEEP VERSATILITY ON- OR OFF-ROAD
Featuring
the Jeep-engineered, coil spring independent front suspension,
Jeep Liberty combines excellent
overall
ride, handling and precise steering control on-road with
Jeep 4x4 capability. Liberty’s Jeep-engineered, coil
spring independent front suspension combines with a link-coil
rear suspension to provide exceptional on-road refinement,
while maintaining its legendary Jeep 4x4 off-road capability
and durability.
All
Jeep Liberty models are available in both two- and four-wheel
drive. Four-wheel drive Liberty
models are equipped
with a Command-Trac® part-time transfer case or the
optional full-time Selec-Trac® transfer case, both
with low-range option.
Jeep
Liberty is built at DaimlerChrysler’s Toledo
(Ohio) North manufacturing facility. Toledo North Assembly
Plant represents the culmination of best practices from
the company’s worldwide operations for lean, flexible,
high-quality production. Jeep Liberty is sold as the Jeep
Cherokee outside North America.

MARKET POSITION
Jeep Liberty is a fun, capable and affordable Jeep that
provides the perfect balance of go-anywhere capability,
high level of refinement and distinctive styling. Liberty
clearly stands apart among car-based sport utilities in
terms of capability, as well as truck-based offerings in
terms of on-road refinement (best of both worlds).
MARKET ADVANTAGES
Jeep
Liberty was created to expand the breadth of the Jeep
lineup and broaden the brand’s
global appeal. Not only for traditional Jeep buyers,
Liberty is also for
a new generation of SUV buyers who value on-road refinement
and ruggedness. Contemporary styling and exceptional feature
content excite loyal Jeep customers and appeal to new ones.
With
the most power in its class, the fun-to-drive Liberty
offers the 3.7-liter Power Tech™ V-6 engine, making
it as capable off-highway as it is competent on any interstate.
In addition, Jeep Liberty is backed by Chrysler Group’s
seven-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty.
The fun-to-drive features of the Liberty are also attributed
to the Jeep-engineered, coil spring independent front suspension.
Liberty combines excellent overall ride, handling and precise
steering control with trail-tested capabilities.
Important
active and passive safety features provide protection
and peace of mind customers expect
from the sport-utility
pioneer. Liberty’s sturdy construction comes from
a network of high-strength alloy steel beams, rails and
pillars, creating a “safety cage” that surrounds
and protects occupants. Available side curtain air bags
provide additional head protection for both front and rear
outboard occupants.
