Jeep's Hung Unlimited, How They Did It

Jeep JK on the Wall at Detroit Auto ShowIf you're only checking out the cars on the floor at this year's NAIAS, make sure you look up to catch one of the HIGHlights of the show. Ten feet above the floor is a four-door Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited, doing a little rock climbing in the Jeep display. While the Jeep motto is "do anything, go anywhere," the Wrangler Unlimited didn't exactly drive itself up there.

The journey up the wall began at MSX International in early December. The mechanics there accepted the challenge of putting the 5,400 pound Jeep on a serious diet—removing the engine, transmission, fluids, battery and anything else they could get their hands on. After that weight loss regimen, the seats, steering wheel and dash were reinstalled. They added fluorescent interior lights and a power supply to give the Jeep Wrangler life and illuminate the vehicle. Then it got cleaned up and shipped to Cobo Center where a crane was waiting.

Once there, it took all of the guys to "rock and roll" the vehicle onto its nose so the crane could pick it up—with a cloth strap, no less.

Once the vehicle was dangling in the air, the crew ran into a snag. The display was built for the two-door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon used in the past. Being ready for any challenge, the crew just whipped out a torch and made some on-the-spot modifications to the mounting brackets. When the modifications were complete, the Jeep took its place at the top of the wall.
