DODGE DURANGO: POWER, HANDLING, VALUE AND SEATING FOR EIGHT
“RIGHT-SIZE”
FORMULA SETS DURANGO APART FROM THE SUV CROWD
The 2003 Dodge
Durango strikes the perfect balance of full-size SUV roominess,
capability and performance combined with compact SUV packaging
and maneuverability.
“Dodge
Durango occupies a unique position in the compact sport-utility
segment, offering standard V-8 power and full-size SUV roominess,”
said Jim Julow, Vice President — Dodge Division Global Brand
Center, DaimlerChrysler Corporation. “Durango also offers
an unbeatable range of packages to meet a wide variety of SUV
buyers’ needs, while remaining true to the bold attitude
of the Dodge brand.”
For 2003,
Durango offers, as standard, four-wheel disc brakes and 16"
x 7" cast-aluminum wheels and an optional six-disc, in-dash
CD player. Standard on all Durangos with 4.7-liter Magnum®
V-8s for 2003, the 5-45RFE transmission offers a second overdrive
ratio for increased highway fuel efficiency and quieter engine
operation at highway speeds.
Offering multiple
seating options and one of the few optional side-curtain air bag
systems for a compact SUV, Durango’s interior provides exceptional
comfort and safety. The driver and passengers will appreciate
the standard AM/FM stereo radio with cassette player and equalizer,
while rear seat passengers can enjoy the optional Mopar DVD Rear
Entertainment Center.
BOLD
STYLING WITH CONVENIENCE INSIDE
The bold exterior styling may make Durango’s first impression,
but its unique interior package leaves a lasting image. Built
to handle full-size needs with compact dimensions, Durango is
unique to the industry.
In its standard
two-row seating configuration, Durango offers comfortable seating
for up to five people and a spacious 88 cubic feet of cargo carrying
capacity. The fold-flat, hide-away third-row seat (standard on
SLT, SLT Plus and R/T) allows Durango to carry up to eight passengers.
The third row can be conveniently accessed from either side of
the vehicle by a simple tilt of the second-row fold-and-tumble
seats. The roof is raised behind the driver seat to provide theater-style
seating for second- and third-row passengers. An available heating,
ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system for the rear has
independently adjustable vents for both the second and third rows,
and a dedicated four-speed blower for enhanced rear passenger
comfort.
Comfort and
convenience abound in Durango. Optional leather seats on SLT (standard
on SLT Plus and R/T) offer a luxurious look and feel. A dual-zone
climate control system offers independent temperature controls
for each front passenger, along with optional heated and six-way
power seats for both. A four-speaker stereo system is standard
on all Durango models, while an eight-speaker, Infinity® sound
system is available as an option.
LEADER
IN POWER and CAPABILITY
Durango is the power and capability leader in the compact SUV
segment. With two powerful Magnum V-8 choices and a responsive
automatic transmission, Durango is a leader for all work and performance
needs.
The 5.9-liter
Magnum V-8 is the largest engine in the compact SUV class. It
provides 245 horsepower (183 kW) at 4000 rpm and 335 lb.-ft. (454
N•m) of torque at 3200 rpm. The 4.7-liter Magnum V-8 engine
produces 235 horsepower (175 kW) at 4800 rpm and 295 lb.-ft. (400
N•m) of torque at 3200 rpm. Durango has a 7550-pound maximum
towing capacity, also best-in-class, and a standard 1670-pound
maximum payload package.
The 5-45RFE
five-speed automatic transmission is the latest edition of the
45RFE transmission introduced in the Durango for 2000. It utilizes
a unique dual-ratio second gear to aid in towing, passing and
grade-change situations. For acceleration, the transmission automatically
chooses the higher-ratio second gear. It also selects the lower-ratio
second gear in kick-down mode, providing better power and passing
performance over a broad speed range.
Durango is
available in both two- and four-wheel drive models. Four-wheel
drive customers can choose either a part-time four-wheel system
or a full-time system that automatically delivers power to all
four wheels for maximum traction in wet or dry conditions.
Durango features
a rack and pinion steering system on both two- and four-wheel
drive models, which provides more responsive steering and a more
precise on-center feel. A lightweight but robust independent front
suspension on four-wheel drive models offers a comfortable, smooth
ride while providing maximum ground clearance for off-road situations.
To meet every
compact SUV need, Durango is available in five models for 2003.
The Durango range of models starts with the monochromatic Sport
and the SXT, which was introduced in 2002, with CD radio, bigger
wheels and tires and a roof rack. The value-priced SXT model is
ideal for the younger buyer who may not need three rows of seats,
but who wants an optimal level of equipment.
Additionally,
Dodge Durango is available in SLT, SLT Plus and R/T models. The
SLT model includes everything standard on the SXT, along with
a host of additional features, including third-row seating, rear
air conditioning and heat, bucket front seats with power on the
driver’s side and fog lamps. The SLT Plus model adds leather
seating and power for both front seats, overhead convenience group,
woodgrain instrument panel, AM/FM stereo radio with six-disc in-dash
CD player and graphic equalizer, eight Infinity speakers and steering
wheel-mounted audio controls.
MAGNUM
POWER AND PERFORMANCE DEFINE DURANGO R/T
The performance model in the Dodge Durango lineup is the Durango
R/T. A throaty V-8 rumble announces the 250-horsepower (187 kW)
5.9-liter Magnum V-8. This is combined with a 3.92:1 rear axle
ratio, limited-slip rear differential and sport-tuned exhaust
to give Durango R/T quicker off-the-line acceleration. Durango
R/T is also equipped with a full-time four-wheel drive transfer
case.
Inside, Durango R/T receives luxurious appointments such as two-tone
R/T embroidered leather-trimmed high-back bucket seats matched
to suede door trim panels. On the outside, each Durango R/T is
identified by bright R/T badging and body-color wheel flares.
Large 17-inch wheels and performance-oriented Goodyear tires are
mated to a sport suspension to provide Durango R/T with tighter
handling.
