save the hammers.org  220x71 NO GRAIN OF SAND! BILL INTRODUCED INTO CONGRESS THAT WILL ESTABLISH JOHNSON VALLEY AS NATIONAL OHV AREA.Today marks an historic day for the OHV community.

The attached bill is the language that will be noticed this morning with the Natural Resources Committee for a hearing next Friday. The intent of the bill is to protect all of Johnson Valley for recreational use, particularly off-highway vehicles, and provide the Marine Corps with narrow training opportunities per the approval of BLM (it specifically excludes the use dud-producing ordinance). There is no intent to close down any uses currently going on inside Johnson Valley (including mining claims). There is a strong desire to keep this bill focused on preserving Johnson Valley.

The Off Road Business Association help its first open Board of Directors meeting in many years at the 2013 Easter Jeep Safari in Moab Utah. Timed during the Industry show the event was well attended by industry leaders. While not open to the general public, the meeting was broadcast over the public address system so that all in attendance could listen in. Topics included the Johnson Valley OHV Fight with news of official support from Congressman Cook announced after a mid day phone conversation with ORBA President Fred Wiley. Wiley reported that Congressman Cook would be exploring the Alternative 4 Hybrid  proposed by the Save The Hammers effort within the California Motorized Recreation Council. Read More→

ORBA is working with a number of local and national organizations to protect motorized recreation in southern Utah.  President Obama is under pressure to designate 1.4 million acres of land in Utah as a National Monument.  The area surrounds Canyonlands National Park near Moab, Utah and is referred to as “Greater Canyonlands.”  There is no widespread local or Congressional support for the designation, which could threaten to close off-highway vehicle (OHV) use and shared access. BU RPR D2R Save JV Check 220x80 Ultra4 Race Teams Join Forces for Land Use FundraiserFebruary 5, 2013, Johnson Valley, CA – The iconic King of the Hammers race in Johnson Valley, CA took on new meaning and added opportunity for education and fundraising this year as racers work to keep the area open to public recreation.  The Marine Corps has been trying to annex the land for their use since 2007 under the auspice of training space and increased national security.  Off-roaders including the race teams involved in King of the Hammers are fighting this move and working tirelessly to keep the 146,000 acres there open to public use.  On February 5th DSquared Racing 4441, Big Ugly Racing 4435 and Race Prep Racing 4474 banded together during this year’s race week with a unique and fun idea – let’s sell cups and throw a party and give the money to the cause. Daren Henke of DSquared Racing said, “An event mid week when we are all working so hard to be ready to race just seemed perfect.” Read More→

(Feb. 7, 2013) – The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) has joined with the Off-Road Business Association (ORBA) and a coalition of other land use advocacy organizations to keep the Johnson Valley OHV Recreation Area open to enthusiasts.

The Marine Corps wants to expand its base at Twentynine Palms, California to include ownership of nearly 147,000 acres of adjacent land in Johnson Valley in order to conduct large-scale training exercises for one or two months a year.  Read More→

The nearly 1200 page document will be reviewed by ORBA legal council at Ecologic Partners over the next few weeks and comments submitted. In addition, ORBA is working with the Livingston Group in Washington, D.C. through its CMRC relationship to lobby Congress to stop the expansion. We have successfully educated bipartisan Congressional membership in both the House and the Senate on this tremendous loss of OHV recreational opportunity.  To date, ORBA has invested over $70,000 into the approximately $300,000 effort to save Johnson Valley.
