Mike Childress blasting through the silt at the SS300

Mike Childress and THR Motorsports came to the Best In The Desert (BITD) Biltek Silver State 300 (SS300) with high expectations after winning the prestigious Mint 400.  With less than a month to prepare Childress’ Porter/ES Motorsports buggy for the Silver State 300, there was little time to celebrate their victory at the Mint.  Childress qualified 14th at the SS300, finishing less than eight seconds behind the fast time in an extremely tight field of 24 Class 1500 (the equivalent of SCORE’s unlimited Class 1) buggies and 22 Trick Trucks.

April 30, 2011- Las Vegas, NV: From grocery-getting Expeditions to monstrous blue-tubed buggies, it was hard to miss the unlimited 4-wheel drive class known as Ultra4 at last weekend’s Best in the Desert Silver State 300. The Ultra4 class, identifiable by their 4400 numbers, proved once again that they can hold their own in the desert:  They were both the largest class at the start line and the largest class to cross the finish line at Saturday’s 300 mile high-speed race through Nevada’s scenic back country. The drivers had weather on their side as cool temperatures kept overheating issues at bay and windy conditions made passing easier on a course that is already known to be a smooth, fast course well suited for many of the Ultra4 cars. Adam Householder on his way to victory
No one gave Householder Motorsports much of a chance of winning last weekend’s Best In The Desert (BITD) Bilek Silver State 300, but that’s what makes off-road racing great.
Anyone can win at any race. Adam Householder had never won a Trick Truck (BITD’s equivalent of SCORE’s Trophy Truck class) race and qualified 28th at the Silver State 300.  Despite the odds, Householder never let his confidence waiver.  “Qualifying was really tight, we were only 18 seconds back but that was enough to push us back to 28th.” Householder explained.  “We ran conservative in qualifying and saved our best for the race.”
