Each year, the Southwest Four Wheel
Drive Association (SWFWDA) holds it's quarterly meeting in Clayton,
Oklahoma. The meeting has spawned itself over the years into a weekend
of serious four-wheeling and is hosted by the Fort Worth Dallas Four
Wheel Drive (FWD-FWD) club.
This year, the event attracted 259
vehicles from all over the southwest. Though dominated by Jeeps, the
Samurais and Toytotas made a very good showing this time around.
Clayton is known for some hard trails, so the field is full of very
capable drivers and very well-built rigs. However, there is always
room and trails for the moderately modified and stockers, as well.
Over the past few years, most
drivers tend to show up mid-day Friday and run Saturday and part of
Sunday. This year, however, nearly 100 vehicles showed up Thursday and
were ready to hit the trails immediately that evening for a night run.
FWD-FWD has found it necessary to
make a ratings system for the vehicles in order to keep them on the
trails they feel they are well-equipped for. So nobody would feel
badly, the trails and vehicles were rated from 2 to 6 instead of 1 to
5. Upon pulling into the rodeo grounds, drivers were instructed to
pull inside the rodeo arena for tech. inspection. If you had lockers,
you were jacked up and had to prove it. Once you were rated, they put
a sticker on your windshield and the trail leaders each day would
double check that you were rated for the trail you were trying to run.
