The latest Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (LOORRS) short course action took place at Las Vegas Motor Speedway last weekend as the race community paid their final respects to Pro4 Unlimited competitor Rick Huseman. Huseman’s life was cut short three weeks ago in a small plane crash that also took his brother Jeff and friend Danny Hicks. Many teams were running No. 36 stickers on their trucks to honor Huseman, including reigning Pro2 Unlimited champion Rob MacCachren.
Seventeen Pro2 Unlimited trucks entered the track on Saturday as the sun set on a beautiful day in Las Vegas. Rob Mac started on the second row in the ROCKSTAR Energy / BFGoodrich Tires / MasterCraft Safety truck, putting him in the thick of the action on the longest LOORRS track in the series. Rob battled Robby Woods and fellow ROCKSTAR Energy athlete Brian Deegan for second place throughout the race, eventually besting both adversaries. MacCachren even moved up to dive inside of the race leader on the final turn but bicycled in a rut; only his considerable skill and some help from the BFGoodrich tires keeping him from turning turtle and giving up a podium position. Rob ended up in second on Saturday, closing Deegan’s series points lead and building a cushion ahead of Carl Renezeder in third place.
Sunday brought cooler temperatures as Las Vegas race fans cheered on hometown favorite MacCachren in the day’s main event. Rockstar Rob started on the first row and jumped out to an early lead that he never relinquished. MacCachren’s ROCKSTAR Energy / BFGoodrich Tires / MasterCraft Safety truck was perfectly intact at the end of the race, something that is unheard of in the rough and tumble world of short course racing. Slick track conditions were giving other competitors fits in the myriad corners on the course, allowing Rob Mac’s superior driving skills to shine.
The weekend’s results mirror the last stop in Arizona, where MacCachren came in second on Saturday and was victorious on Sunday. Only one race remains in the season, and in order for Rockstar Rob to win his fourth straight championship he needs not only to win, but for first place competitor Brian Deegan to falter. Short course is not the only place that Rob Mac is looking to win a championship though. This week he heads south to Mexico to begin prerunning the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 race course in his quest for a SCORE season championship in the elite Trophy Truck class. MacCachren is currently second in points in SCORE International in his No. 20 ROCKSTAR Energy / MasterCraft Safety / BFGoodrich Tires Jimco Trophy Truck. This year’s Baja 1000 course uses much of the terrain that Rob has already been victorious on early this season, so overall victory is not improbable.
