  • Another Top 10 Finish For Team Trail-Gear

Trail-Gear arrived on the lakebed almost a week before the big race to make their final tweaks and get the car fully dialed in. A 9th place finish at last year’s King of the Hammers proved that the 4-cylinder, Ecotec powered engine at the heart of the #17 Trail-Gear Godspeed buggy had what it took to be a contender at the toughest off road race in the world.

“I’ll drive fast enough to put that fire out.” Those were the words of Matt Messer, owner of Trail-Gear, regarding concerns of a potential fire if any race fuel were to spill onto the turbo during refueling in the pits. It was obvious that their only options were to win or break trying. Starting at the middle of the pack in 44th position meant having to reel in a large number of other racers to move into contention. • Big Ugly Unexpectedly Goes “Pink” for King of the Hammers 2011

After experiencing a devastating transmission failure only hours before the start of King Of the Hammers 2011, Kevin Sacalas of Big Ugly Racing asked In the Pink Racing if they’d like to join forces to race in the main event.  In the Pink missed qualifying in the Last Chance Qualifier by only a couple spots.  When Sacalas discovered the transmission was irreparable, he decided to make the best of a bad situation. He had a spot in the race and no car, and In the Pink had a car but no spot. So they decided to join forces. Both teams spent months preparing for this event and combining their efforts just made sense.  “Both of our teams have a lot of heart, and I remember when I missed qualifying in my TJ by a couple of spots. We both had crews fully prepped and ready to go. Joining our teams and being able to work with a group that loves this sport as much as I do is a win for all of us.” (more…)

  • Steve Olliges and John Swift Joins Forces Once Again For 2011 Desert Racing Season

For those familiar with desert racing’s rich history, the names John Swift and Steve Olliges are instantly recognizable.  John Swift was an original member of the legendary Ford Rough Riders factory team, racking up an impressive list of wins against competition like Ivan Stewart and Rick Mears, while Olliges joined the team four years later in Class 8S.  Olliges and Swift are not content to just talk about the “good old days”, on the contrary they are still making history.  For 2011, the duo will team up for the entire Best in the Desert schedule and select SCORE International and SNORE races in their new No. 28 BFGoodrich / MasterCraft Safety Trick Truck.  Swift and Olliges’ last win together was in 2008 at the Silver State 300, so the duo is not unfamiliar with being at the top of the podium.   The new BFGoodrich / MasterCraft Safety truck will debut on February 6th at the Parker 425, BITD’s season opening race for 2011.  Coincidently, this is the same venue where Swift and Olliges last raced together, finishing 2nd in the Trick Truck class in 2009.  “Steve and I have very high expectations,” John Swift recently commented.  “We are racing for the season championship.”  The task will not be easy, with a record number of Trick Trucks slated to run in the Best in the Desert series this season.   (more…)
