  • From a Desert Safari to the Streets of Long Beach WELD Drift Series Driver JTP Will Open the Season in Style

From a Desert Safari to the Streets of Long Beach WELD Drift Series Driver JTP Will Open the Season in Style

Kansas City, Mo.WELD’s new partnership with Justin Pawlak, or JTP as he is known by fans, for the 2015 race season will take the high-profile professional Formula Drift series driver from the desert in Moab, Utah to the streets of Long Beach for the season’s first race.

JTP is participating in the Easter Jeep Safari, which consists of trail rides, departing from Moab throughout the 9-day long event that concludes on Sunday, April 5. JTP will take part in the event for the first time from April 1-4, supporting the 100th anniversary JC Whitney Jeep JK sporting custom made WELD racing gear and WELD Rekon XT Bead-Loc wheels.

“Part of the purpose of the trail ride is to help clean up the desert,” explained Pawlak. “It’s one of those events I’ve been wanting to participate in for the past couple of years, but because it’s so close to my first round of competition I’ve skipped it in the past. This year I’m biting the bullet and looking forward to some trail rides and fun.”

After his desert excursion, JTP will be going “sideways” in Long Beach for the season opening first Formula Drift event on April 11 at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Street Course. JTP has competed in the high-profile professional Formula Drift series for a number of years with increased success each season. Piloting a 2014 Ford Mustang, JTP has changed the color scheme of the car this year to a satin black and what he describes as more of an old hot rod or “rat rod” look to the vehicle. He will utilize WELD Street & Strip RTS S77B sporting 18×9 inch wheels on the front of the car and 18×10.5 inch in the rear.

“I think we have a really good team this year, and I’m excited about the partners that have come on board for the 2015 season,” explained JTP. “It is a pleasure to partner with WELD and to be able to run a high-quality, made in the USA wheel.”

JTP says he’s excited to open the season and his goal is to top the podium with wins. “In addition to being a racer, I’m also an entertainer and I go out there and slide my car inches from the wall and give the spectators a good show. I think that’s what is really important to show the fans— the car control that we have.”

  • Ryan Poelman, Todd Jackson and Eduardo Laguna Take Home the Prestigious Oakley Bomb Award at the 2015 Polaris RZR Mint 400 presented by General Tire

Ryan Poelman, Todd Jackson and Eduardo Laguna Take Home the Prestigious Oakley Bomb Award at the 2015 Polaris RZR Mint 400 presented by General Tire

March 27th, 2015 – San Diego, CA – The first Oakley Bomb Award for desert off-road racing was handed out at the 2012 Mint 400.  Since then, Oakley has kept the tradition alive, honoring the Mint 400 racers that clock the fastest lap at the The Great American Off-Road Race™.

This year, Oakley gave away their coveted Bomb Awards at The 2015 Polaris RZR Mint Mint 400
presented by General Tire to the driver and co-driver of three classes:

    Fastest Lap in Class 1500
Fastest Lap in Class 6000, Trophylite
Fastest Lap in Class Pro UTV Class

    unnamed 3

Over fifty UTV’s strong rolled up to the start line of the 2015 Mint 400, making them the second largest class in the race.  Numbers alone warranted an Oakley Bomb Award for fastest lap in one of the most competitive classes.  Only nineteen Pro UTV’s finished the race and it was #1962 Ryan Poelman that threw down the fastest lap time of 02:21:13.712 on his second lap.  Poelman earned a third place finish in the class behind Scott Kiger and Pro UTV class winner, Dustin Jones.

    unnamed 2

A true drivers class, the General Tire Trophylite Race Series was created to provide an affordable alternative to the high cost of racing. Drivers are pitted against each other in identical vehicles that provide the thrill of competitive off-road racing.  Fifteen Trophylite trucks started the race but only eight finished.  Despite having to change a drive shaft on his first lap, #6002 Todd Jackson won the Oakley Bomb award in Class 6000 Trophylite.  Once back on course, Jackson laid down a blistering lap time of 02:20:50.772 on his second lap to earn a coveted award.

    unnamed 4

The thundering speed and capabilities of Class 1500 make it worthy of an Oakley Bomb Award.  Thirty four of the top open wheeled drivers came fists up to the Mint 400 but only half survived the brutal fight.  Eleventh overall finisher, #1537 Eduardo Laguna, was one of only a few racers to finish a lap of The Mint 400 in under two hours.  “Lalo” did it in just 01:59:52.868 on his second lap, earning mad respect and the final Oakley Bomb award up for grabs at the 2015 Polaris RZR Mint 400 presented by General Tire.

About The Polaris RZR Mint 400, presented by General Tire
Known as “The Greatest Off-Road Race in America,” The Mint 400 is an epic four hundred mile battle between the top off-road racers in the world in over twenty different classes of off-road vehicles. The race was started in 1967, and is steeped in American lore, as thousands of racers, as well as celebrities from around the world, have attempted to tame the brutal Nevada desert. An entire week of events lead up the famed off-road race in and around Las Vegas, including a vehicle parade, drivers meet and greet, pit crew contest, crowning of Miss Mint, multiple parties, qualifying, and contingency / vehicle tech inspection.

Yokohama Tire Corporation Shifts 2015 Motorsports Programs into High Gear

SANTA ANA, CA (March 17, 2015) – Producing tires for a wide variety of racing disciplines – Red Bull Global Rallycross, sports car and off-road – Yokohama Tire Corporation’s (YTC) 2015 motorsports season is ready to roll.

“Yokohama prides itself on the breadth of our racing program and how it pushes our tire development,” said Duane Sampson, YTC manager, motorsports. “Our tires have to handle everything from road courses like Road America in Wisconsin to the rocky terrain of Baja, California to the rallycross course in Barbados.”

For the full 2015 Yokohama motorsports calendar, go to http://www.yokohamatire.com/calendar_main/. Yokohama’s racing slate includes:

    Red Bull Global Rallycross

YTC enters its second year as the exclusive tire supplier of the Red Bull Global Rallycross (RBGRC), with the series expanding in 2015 from 10 races to 12. RBGRC combines the best elements of rally, stadium, circuit and off-road racing, lending itself to harrowing stunts and wheel-to-wheel competition. Cars in the series are heavily modified from their street-going counterparts, packed with all-wheel drive, 600 horsepower and Yokohama ADVAN® race tires. Star drivers include 2014 champion Joni Wiman, Tanner Foust, Scott Speed, Bucky Lasek, Travis Pastrana and Nelson Piquet Jr.

“The ADVAN tire we supply for RBGRC is a good example of our motorsport tire technology,” said Sampson. “Prior to Yokohama’s involvement, RBGRC ran bias-ply tires. Yokohama has since engineered a radial slick that could handle the rigors of extreme conditions that exist in the exciting racing format.”

The series starts May 31 in Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida.

Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama

Covering eight venues with 16 rounds, Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama is the largest single-make Porsche series in the world. It features two classes of vehicles that race on YTC’s orange oil-infused racing slick, the ADVAN® ENV-R2.

Porsche GT3 Cup enters its seventh consecutive season with Yokohama as its exclusive tire supplier. Semi-professional and up-and-coming drivers compete in two car classes, Platinum and Gold. The drivers will compete on some of the best tracks in the U.S., including Circuit of the Americas, Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca and NOLA Motorsports Park, a new venue near New Orleans, Louisiana, that has been added this season.

The racing heats up March 18-20 at Sebring.

    Off-Road Racing: SCORE & BITD

Coming off a third-place finish in the SCORE Trophy Truck division at last year’s Baja 1000, Cameron Steele and his Desert Assassins team return under Yokohama sponsorship for 2015.

Steele, a two-time SCORE Person of the Year, runs race-engineered 40-inch GEOLANDAR A/T-S® R tires mounted on his 800-horsepower No. 16 Geiser Brothers Trophy Truck. The tires are designed to endure some of the world’s harshest terrains at speeds in excess of 120 mph. For 2015, the team will focus on the major desert off-road races in North America, including the SCORE Baja 500, SCORE Baja 1000, and the Best in the Desert’s Vegas to Reno.
