  • FOX Rock Racing Pilot, Erik Miller, Earns the Title of "King" at 2012 King of the Hammers

Erik Miller left 134 competitors in the dust to take his first King of the Hammers title—his nearest competitor was nearly thirteen minutes behind him.

Erik Miller KOH videoSantee, CA February 29, 2012 – FOX—the industry-leading ride dynamics company— equipped rock racer, Erik Miller, wins his first King of the Hammers, becoming one of three FOX drivers to win the race since its inception five years ago. FOX now has four of the five titles to its credit with Shannon Campbell’s two wins in 2008 and 2011, and Jason Scherer bringing home the win in 2009.

Erik Miller crossed the finish line after 6 hours of controlled chaos besting second place by nearly thirteen minutes. Miller previously finished fifth in 2010, fourteenth in 2011. The win-defining choice that attributed to his 2012 victory was his decision to purchase a set of FOX Bypass shocks and Coil-overs from his local dealer. (more…)

  • Official Scoring Correction-King of the Hammers

Official Scoring Correction Following Competition Review Board Assessment

February 23, 2012 (Lake Arrowhead, CA) – After reviewing comments from the Bureau of Land Management, Course Officials, and competitors; and with support of video coverage, the Competition Review Board (CRB) for the 2012 Griffin King of the Hammers has announced time penalties for seven drivers as a result of an illegal line that afforded both competitive advantage and created increased risk to course workers and spectators.

It was announced at all drivers meetings that drivers must stay in the bottom of the rock canyons, specifically at the entrance of the rock trail known as Chocolate Thunder.  The Bureau of Land Management approved the nearby spectator areas to be inside of the 150’ setback standard based on the natural topography mitigating risk and providing a natural barrier from race car incursion into the spectator area.  By taking the illegal line on the high left side of the rock ‘gatekeeper’ that natural barrier was eliminated and risk was increased.  As such, the seven drivers who took the aforementioned line on Chocolate Thunder will be assessed a 30 minute time penalty added to total elapsed time.

The CRB also deliberated a similar line used just past the gatekeeper but determined that the lack of inherent risk coupled with conflicting instructions given by onsite course workers made assessing a time penalty impractical and punitive.

Hammerking shares with all its competitors the responsibility of maintaining the safest environment possible for all course workers and spectators.  A review is currently underway to determine if there is a more effective way to mark illegal course bypasses and the method which specific course details are communicated.

The Competition Review Board consists of KOH Race Director, Event Director, Tech Inspector, Operations Director, and Driver Liaison.  There will be no further sanctions based on this specific incident. Updated list of official finishers listed below:

  • The Crown Goes East As Erik Miller Wins the 2012 Griffin King of the Hammers

Erik MillerFebruary 11, 2012 (Johnson Valley, CA) – On Saturday at at 2:03 p.m., Erik Miller crossed the finish line to be crowned the 2012 King of the Hammers.  Considered the toughest one day off-road race, Miller beat out 134 competitors to win the coveted title and $25,000 prize purse.

“There are one thousand opportunities to make mistakes out there,” Erik Miller explained at the finish line, “and we just try to make as few as possible.”  The humble Miller was describing the secret to his success at the 2012 Griffin King of the Hammers, where he finished the grueling 165-mile race in six hours and three minutes.  “I could not have done this without the help of my friends.  We have been in Johnson Valley for the past twelve days getting ready for this race,” the Maryland resident explained.  Miller is no stranger to success; he was the 2010 International Endurance Champion and came in fifth at last year’s Griffin King of the Hammers.  “I added Fox bypass shocks this year and they really helped me carry speed through the desert,” Miller revealed.   He is the first East Coast competitor to win the prestigious title in the event’s six year history. • 4WHEEL PARTS QUALIFYING ROUNDS – DAY 2

Nelson, Miller, and Gordon Shine on Day 2 of the 2012 Griffin King of the Hammers

    King of the Hammers

Nick Nelson laid down a time of 4:46 at Wednesday’s 4Wheel Parts Time Trials, ending up second overall in the two-day qualifier for the Griffin King of the Hammers this Friday, February 10th

Unlike the solid axles used on Mooneyham’s Trick Toys Fabrication race car, Nick Nelson’s buggy from Jimmy’s 4×4 utilizes independent front suspension (IFS) for better compliance at speed.  The brand new, blazing yellow buggy set the fastest time, while most of the field struggled to even finish the course.  Only 55 of 70 starters reached the finishing gates under their own power on Wednesday.  The rest either succumbed to mechanical failure or frayed nerves as thousands of fans cheered them on in person and tens of thousands followed the 4Wheel Parts Time Trials online. The Griffin King of the Hammers Happy Hour pitted the best in Ultra4 racing in a nonstop barrage of horsepower, dust and adrenalin. Past Kings found themselves mired at the beginning of the course watching their hopes for a early starting position vanish before their eyes.  (more…)
