Warn Industries has introduced the 9.0R, designed exclusively for competitive rockcrawlers. Weighing in at only 48 pounds and only 17 inches wide, this winch is definitely no lightweight - especially when it comes to the power department, as it is rated at a full 9,000 pounds. The 9.0R comes painted bright red and includes a remote solenoid box for easier winch mounting, a remote control, and a special polished “W-shaped” aluminum fairlead.

Currently, only limited quantities of this unique winch are available and these are only for sale to rockcrawlers actively competing in UROC, CalRocs, NEUROC, ProROCK, or W.E.Rock events. Those interested must FAX a completed event registration form to Warn prior to being allowed to purchase the 9.0R.

With the introduction of the 9.0R, Warn announced a $35,000 Rock Crawling Contingency Program for winning competitive rock crawlers who run Warn 9.0R winches. For details, go the Warn website and check it out!

We mounted this 9.0R on a buggy belonging to Val Minozevski, of 2 Fat Guys Goodyear and 2 V’s Racing. Val will be competing in various W.E.Rock rockcrawling competitions around the country this year, so he was eligible for the 9.0R.

Since Val already has a Warn M8000 mounted in the front of his buggy, he chose to mount this 9.0R in the rear, where even less space is available for a normal-sized winch.

Both front and rear winches can be used not only in vehicle recovery, but also to compress the front or rear suspensions on either steep inclines or declines, eliminating the springing back of the suspension that can actually push the vehicle away from the rock, resulting in either end of the buggy going airborne! Definitely not a good thing!

The 9.0R winch drum is shortened considerably to save weight and space, and is rated to hold 50 feet of 3/8” synthetic rope. (The winch does not come with a rope). Most of the competitions now require synthetic rope for safety reasons, so we chose to install 35 feet of 3/8” Viking Trail Line with a 10 foot optional line protector. With the thicker protector, there’s no way we could reasonably get 50 feet of rope on this small drum…as you can see, it sure fills it up!

The Viking line is made of Dyneema and has a special Urethane coating to help with longevity. With a breaking strength of 19,600 pounds, the line should be plenty strong for any off-road use, competition or otherwise. Our rope was also built with a heavy duty hook and crush-proof thimble.

Warn has been involved in the sport of rockcrawling since its inception. Their release of the awesome 9.0R, and their contingency program confirms their commitment to the sport.

Says Warn Industries COO Tom Giacomini, “We are looking forward to this season and to give back to competitors who use our products.
