RENO, NV JUNE 6, 2010: The VORRA race Memorial Day weekend was the perfect display of American Patriotism racing over 300 miles of desert course with spectators on every corner, and a parade to kick off the racing tradition. The third race of the VORRA season, and first of the desert challenges, met the high expectations for quality action that VORRA is known for.
The Yerington 300 was a challenging 50-mile loop course totaling 300 miles through the desert just west of town. “The consensus going into the race was that it was going to be super fast, and Sam Berri’s average speed of 53.4mph proved that,” said Harbor when commenting about the race terrain. “But when only a total of 26 out of 58 cars finish the required laps, it proves that fast isn’t always easy!” A total of 65 vehicles entered this race, including vehicles from other successful series that did not easily top the VORRA competitors.
Sam Berri maintained his significant lead in the Class 1 VORRA series with Mike Viola of Viola racing in second after working his way up the pack from his 9th place start. Team Chaos ruled Group T with Matt Vaughan taking the win and Mike Koenig finishing second. Other action in the Group T class was Sam Co. Racing in 3rd place rolled his car in the last lap and still managed to finish 4th behind Gary Dixon. Patrick Timmons in Class 10 and Brad Falin in Ultra4 finished 1st in their class, giving them a 1st place three-peat in the VORRA series. Red Team Racing, with Bill Lott and Skeeter behind the wheel, took a solid second place in Class 10. Also taking first place finishes were Roger Ceballos in Class 7, Dave Oram in Class 9, Richard Palasik in Class 11, Bruce Field in Class 8, Brad Falin in Pro Quad, Nathan McBride in the Sportsman Class, Dennis Jean in the UTV’s, and Steven Daniels in the Amateur Quad class.
“There was great momentum going into this race and twice as many spectators this year than in years past,” said promoter Wes Harbor. “The town people of Yerington, NV really made a showing at the parade lining the street for the long stretch of cars, and also lining the race course the next day!” VORRA is in its 35th year of producing high quality yet affordable racing while also creating fun events around the race making it a great place to have friends and family enjoy spectating or competing.
The next race will be the Xtreme Outlaws 250, a new race in the VORRA series this year. “The course is much more rocky and technical with a lack of high speed roads as compared to last weekend,” said Harbor. The course was designed with the assistance of Grand Marshall and racing legend Rod Hall. The Xtreme Outlaw event is a combination of events at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, NV.
