A Rollercoaster Weekend For ROCKSTAR Energy Drink’s Rob MacCachren

Rob MacCachren is no stranger to the podium
In his quest to win his fourth consecutive Pro2 title, ROCKSTAR Energy Drink’s Rob MacCachren knew that he needed a big weekend at Glen Helen Raceway.  While Rob tasted the thrill of victory on Saturday, he also felt the agony of defeat the following day.  On Saturday Rob Mac not only dominated at Glen Helen, he also learned that he will be inducted into the Off Road Motorsports Hall of Fame this year and will join the ranks of fellow racing legends such as Walker Evans and Ivan Stewart.  “I am honored to be included in the company of men who are heroes and mentors in the sport,” the humble MacCachren stated emotionally after the announcement.  MacCachren’s induction ceremony will be held at the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum at the Pomona, California Fairgrounds during the weekend of the Lucas Oil Off Road Expo in October.  SCORE International held their drawing for the Tecate SCORE San Felipe Challenge of Champions on Saturday as well, and Rob MacCachren learned that he drew the number one starting position.  Unfortunately there was nowhere to go but down, as MacCachren experienced on Sunday.
MacCachren was fourth in points in Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series’ (LOORRS) marquee Pro2 Unlimited class coming into the weekend and needed a victory to catapult him up in the standings.  He qualified second for Saturday’s race, which put him on the third row after the standard inversion.  Rob quickly moved the No. 1 ROCKSTAR Energy Drink / BFGoodrich Tires / MasterCraft Safety truck up to fourth place and began to put pressure on Rob Naughton in front of him.  As he has done previously this season, MacCachren moved past Naughton and was in third place at the mandatory caution.  A collision in turn two and a vehicle fire brought out the red flag, but when the course went green Rockstar’s Rob went to work on the competition in front of him.  MacCachren made a clean pass on Brian Deegan and then put the screws to Robby Woods.  When Woods went high, MacCachren pointed the No. 1 ROCKSTAR Energy Drink / BFGoodrich Tires / MasterCraft Safety truck to bottom of the track and took the lead.  Rob never looked back, extending his lead by the time the checkers came out.
Rob MacCachren leads the pack at Glen Helen
Sunday started right where Saturday left off.  MacCachren started on the third row and was in third place on the first lap.  Rob waited patiently while the two competitors in front of him wore each other down, then when the opportunity came he pounced and took the lead on the second turn of the second lap after the mandatory caution.  Just when it appeared as though MacCachren was on his way to another victory, he flipped end-over-end in turn four, bringing out the full course caution.  MacCachren was able to briefly continue, but the No. 1 ROCKSTAR Energy / BFGoodrich Tires / MasterCraft Safety truck had sustained heavy damage.  A few laps later the truck began smoking heavily and MacCachren’s race came to an end.  Only after the race did Rob Mac learn that his Pro2 Unlimited truck was not the only one to sustain damage.  MacCachren suffered a broken collarbone and bruised Achilles tendon.
Despite his injuries, MacCachren still intends to race at Bark River International Raceway in Michigan next weekend, where he leads TORC’s Pro 2WD class season standings ahead of his former protégé Bryce Menzies.  Following Bark River ROCKSTAR Energy’s Rob MacCachren heads to the Tecate SCORE San Felipe Challenge of Champions on September 9-11.  This same course where MacCachren claimed his first SCORE Trophy Truck win of the 2011 season in March, and with a number one starting position clean air is certain to help Rob pilot the No. 20 ROCKSTAR Energy / MasterCraft Jimco Trophy Truck to another victory.  MacCachren has his sights set on the SCORE Trophy Truck season championship; he currently sits second in SCORE season points with only Bryce Menzies standing in his way of another championship.
