I’m wondering what guys are using for converters. Years ago I had a buggy with a th400 and an ArtCarr converter that Twisted Customs worked with ArtCarr (Texas) to build. I mention Texas because at the time there were two AC’s

My buggy was tpi small block/stack 5.14 transfercase/4.10 d60’s and 44” tsl’s

I could walk beside it, reach in and touch the throttle and the buggy would smoothly accelerate. If I let off it would stop rolling.

I’m my head I’m wondering how much that had to do with the 4.10. Right at a 52/1 crawl ratio.

I’m in the planning stages and a 4l65e is my transmission choice. So I’m pondering converters.

At the time ArtCarr said my converter was considered by them to be a “high efficiency high stall” terminology that isn’t used together too often. It’s rather small. They said they used parts from a th200/th400 to build it. Based on its size I sort of always assumed it was a th200 converter that was modified for higher stall but splined onto a th400 and the size and modifications made it “HE/HS” and that allowed the control that I had.

Scott@rockstomper ad a C6 converter from AC that gave him similar control with similar gearing.

Anyways, I wanted to start a conversation and see what others think or know and what guys who run 4l60/700r4 ish transmissions use and what their “driving through the brakes” experience is/was.

3800SC and 700R here....I run a stock HD/towing converter. 75:1 crawl ratio. It DOES crawl thru 1st on drops, but a quick bump to 2nd is usually sufficient for stopping. On trail is ridiculously controllable...instant throttle, easy to control on climbs, 2nd or 3rd for drops and run out. MVB (not reverse), which I far prefer. As Higgs said once after he drove my buggy "it's like an old girlfriend....you know exactly what to expect".

I'd tell you the details on the trans build, but it is seriously 20+ years old....even the converter. I know I spared no expense (5 pinion planetary, billet servo, Corvette Sun, etc) but parts were reliable and cheap(ish) back then....
