Project: Challis Creek Lakes Trailhead Development
Location: Idaho

Description: On September 6, 2025, 19 volunteers collaborated with Tread Lightly!, Idaho Parks and Recreation, Salmon-Challis National Forest, Idaho Single Track Alliance and the Mountain West Recreation Alliance to establish a new trailhead and staging area for the Challis Creek Lakes technical 4×4 route in Central Idaho.

This undertaking encompassed the clearing of trees and vegetation from the designated trailhead/staging area, the installation of a new jackleg fence around the staging area, the implementation of new gates and cattle guard, the development of a new map, and educational signage, as well as the construction of a new kiosk.

This work would not have been possible without the dedicated group of volunteers who contributed their time over the weekend to enhance this scenic off-road trail. Special gratitude is extended to the Mountain West Recreation Alliance for their assistance in recruiting volunteers, Backcountry Hunters and Anglers and OnX Offroad for supplying food for our volunteers, and Toyota for documenting the event.

Thank you to the partners who made this possible:

“This project is a testament to the dedication of public land user groups to come together to improve our forests and trails. Thank you to our volunteers and partners who work tirelessly to protect public lands for future generations.”-Evan Robins, Tread Lightly! Assistant Director, Programs

“With collaboration between land managers, recreation user groups, and industry leaders, projects like this are possible and happening.”-Brian DiLenge, Idaho Parks and Recreation

“I was glad to represent the dirtbike community at this event. Working with other user groups to improve Idaho’s trail system is priceless. Coming together for a common good is rewarding and benefits us all!”-Mike Evans, Idaho Single Track Alliance

“The Idaho Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers values the ongoing partnership opportunities that the Challis Lakes project provided. Over the last few years, BHA has partnered with some of these same groups, such as the River of No Return Chapter of Trout Unlimited, TreadLightly! and Idaho Parks and Recreation, on multiple stewardship projects, and each time the relationship and positive impact grows. Though we all may have different ways of enjoying our public lands, at the end of the day we have the same shared values and goals. Working together to accomplish a great project like Challis Lakes helps to improve and protect the public lands we all love and value here in Idaho.”-Jessica French, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers
