Project: Ward Canyon Spring Cleanup
Location: Utah
Description: On May 31, 2025, Tread Lightly! hosted the annual Ward Canyon Spring Clean-up Project in collaboration with the Salt Lake Ranger District (SLRD) of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. This event targeted popular recreational shooting sites and OHV (off-highway vehicle) areas along Ward Canyon Road, a high-use corridor due to its proximity to the Salt Lake City metro area.
With the help of 11 dedicated volunteers, approximately 400 pounds of trash was removed, including spent shell casings, broken targets, glass, and general debris. This cleanup effort is part of an ongoing initiative to promote responsible recreation and ensure continued access to public lands by addressing impacts in heavily used areas.
The Ward Canyon cleanup is a recurring stewardship event that reflects the strong commitment of both the Salt Lake Ranger District and the volunteer community to the principles of shared stewardship and ethical land use. The success of this annual effort helps maintain public access, protect natural resources, and reduce the potential for closures due to misuse.
