While you're
still greasy, remove the old grease from the knuckle, because
you will be grinding there shortly.

Grease up
the Newfield being sure to pack it well while rotating it several
timesj. Also, repack your wheelbearings and hub assembly. To
install your Newfields onto the axle shaft, make sure the splines
are straight and carefully tap the Newfield onto the axle shaft
using the block of wood at the bottom, while smacking it on
the ground in a vertical manner.

Now the fun part.
I'm not sure how much you have to grind, but this was the most time
consuming task I had to do. All in all, it took about an hour for
both sides. Place a ring of paper towels inside the knuckle around
the edge and another couple inside the axle shaft housing to keep
out the metal shavings. |
On the top and
bottom of the knuckle assembly, grind for about 10 minutes each
using a die grinder and a medium stone. Wipe it clean and check
if the Newfield will fit easily. Don't force it. Just keep grinding
until it fits in. |
After it slides
in without force, remove it and clean the housing of all the metal
shavings, remove the paper towels and clean it again. [Editor's
Note: A magnet would be useful here, as well] |
