BLUERIBBON COALITION LANDUSE UPDATE!
CALIFORNIA - Comments Needed on Piute Travel Management Plan
Dear BRC Action Alert Subscriber,
The Sequoia National Forest, located in central California, has published a Notice of Intent (NOI) to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to evaluating the possible environmental effects of the Forest's proposed Piute Mountains Travel Management Plan.
According the U.S. Forest Service, the proposed action regarding the Piute Mountains Travel Management Plan was developed collaboratively through engagement with interested individuals at five public meetings held in Kernville in October and November of 2010 and January 2011. Citizen groups formed during these meetings developed their desired road and trail systems for the Piute Mountains area, and then helped combine their different versions into a single map to serve as the Proposed Action. The Proposed Action was evaluated and modified by forest staff familiar with the Piute Mountains environmental and cultural resources.
For more information on meetings and copies of the maps and documents, visit the Piute Mountains Travel Management Project website http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sequoia/projects/piutes-tm/index.html.
The scoping period for this project will run from February 18 to March 21, 2011. Please read the Proposed Action described in the scoping letter and the Notice of Intent, and submit your comments no later than March 21, 2011.
Please send your comments, issues, and opinions regarding the proposed action, in writing, to Warren Niemi, Environmental Coordinator, Sequoia National Forest, 1839 South Newcomb Street, Porterville, CA 93257, by March 21,2011.
Comments may also be e-mailed to comments-pacificsouthwestsequoia@fs.fed.us.
For more information, please contact Warren Niemi, Environmental Coordinator at (559)784-1500 or by email to wniemi@fs.fed.us.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact BRC.
Thanks in advance for your involvement,
Ric Foster
