Project: Lake Delancy West OHV Campground Renovation
Location: Florida

Description: This project was funded by Can-Am Off-Road. Can-Am has committed to funding trail stewardship projects in partnership with Tread Lightly! to help maintain and improve access to public lands and off-road trails.

On January 20, 2024, a 35-person team including staff from the Ocala National Forest, Tread Lightly!, representatives from Can-Am and volunteers gathered to facilitate multiple renovations in the Lake Delancy West OHV Campground. Together volunteers removed 125 lbs of trash from the area, installed new campsite corral fencing, power washed three restrooms, removed 37 bags of invasive plants, and trimmed brush overgrowth to restore this campground to its natural beauty.

Thank you to the partners that made this possible:

“On Saturday, January 20, 2023, 22 volunteers, a representative from Can-Am, a representative from Tread Lightly and 11 Forest Service employees came together to beautify Lake Delancy Campground. Fence replacement, invasive species removal, weed eating, and blowing off of sites were some of the tasks completed during this joint effort. Thank you to all that made this event a success. When our recreational areas look better they get treated better.”- Antoinette L. Davis, Natural Resource Specialist

“The Ocala National Forest has one campground for the North OHV trails and one campground for the South OHV trails. These campgrounds are primitive with no amenities other than a bathroom with no running water. However, these campgrounds bring thousands of people each year to enjoy our OHV trails and are often the first impression of the Ocala National Forest. Camp Delancey West received lots of cosmetic and structural improvements today thanks to Can-Am, Tread Lightly! and a host of volunteers. Sprucing up this beautiful campground on the lake automatically gives you the positive impression that you want to enhance your recreation experience. All the new lumber and boundary structures for campsites will bring a smile to visitors and make these campsites stand out. When these projects are done it communicates a positive image to the public and it projects a caring attitude. This can go a long way to influence how the public treats our forest and the amenities it offers.”- Don Schlonski, volunteer

“It is always so rewarding to see so many organizations coming together to make a positive impact on our motorized recreation trails, areas and campgrounds, helping us Protect the Adventure and Protect the Fun for generations to come.. This was, indeed, one of those success stories having 22 OHV volunteers and 11 USFS personnel join Tread Lightly! and Can-Am restore a wonderful OHV Campground to its natural beauty. Thank you to Can-Am, USFS and our wonderful volunteers for supporting this workday and helping Tread Lightly! make a positive impact on this beautiful campground.”-Lowell Eckart, Tread Lightly! Southeast Stewardship Program Manager
