14.54 Tons of Trash Removed from the Nevada Desert at the Inaugural Mint 400 Dash for Trash Desert Clean Up

The inaugural Dash For Trash desert clean-up event that took place on Saturday, October 16th uniting the off-road community to promote sustainable habits and responsible public land use removed 14.54 tons of waste from the Nevada desert this past weekend. The event was brought to you by The Mint 400, Race-Dezert.com and UTVUnderground.com, partnered with Republic Services, to showcase the off-road community’s commitment to serve as environmental stewards and improve the Southern Nevada desert landscape.

Local off-road racing clubs, enthusiasts and many Southern Nevada residents came together on Saturday to make a difference in our community and our public lands. Combined, more than 140 volunteers collected 30,000 pounds of garbage from the surrounding desert area. Republic Services collected and removed the bags of trash from the area.

“We were thrilled to be working with Republic Services on the Dash for Trash project this fall. The Mint 400 race is one of Nevada’s most iconic events and requires close coordination with a myriad of agencies to ensure we are using our federal lands in a safe and responsible manner,” says Joshua Martelli, chief operating officer with Mint 400 INC. “Partnering on this project gives the entire off-road racing and enthusiast community a great opportunity to showcase our concern for the ecosystems that surround Las Vegas while demonstrating responsible stewardship as part of retaining access to OHV lands for recreation as well.”

By now, you’ve all caught wind of a duo dubbed The Gentleman’s Guide to Racing. Made up of wheel man Michael “Skiny” Power and Cultural Attache Spanish Tony, The GGTR takes its audience on a journey into an unfamiliar world inhabited by a dying breed of gentlemen racers. You might have first seen them at The Mint 400 or Baja 1000 but they’ve long had skin in the game of off-road.  Earlier this year, they took their brand of humor to the NORRA Mexican 1000 and documented their trials and tribulations in a very rare Nissan Class 1 truck that George LaMonte rescued from the crusher and brought back to life.  Here’s their story!

    A Prelude to War: The 2016 Score-International Baja 500

One can argue the value of having a stacked field of competitors but regardless of car count, it only takes two to create a race.  In fact, one could argue that one vehicle trying to simply finish a 500 mile Baja course is remarkable and worth tuning in for. In this world of homogenized tame sports and entertainment, Baja is still punk rock and that’s what makes it magical. Anything can happen and it will. (more…)

  • LOORRS Heads to Utah for Rounds 5 & 6

LOORRS Heads to Utah for Rounds 5 & 6

Lucas Oil Off Road Racing leaves California and heads to Utah Motorsports Campus, formerly knows as Miller Motorsports Park, in Tooele, Utah on May 21 and 22, 2016. This is the seventh visit to the Utah track and it’s taking place a month earlier than in year’s past. This means it will be about 10 degrees cooler; perfect spectating weather to watch 900+ hp trucks battle door-to-door off jumps and big sweeping turns. This is the only time they come to Utah this season so there’s no excuse to miss out.

    unnamed 2

Rounds 5 and 6 are shaping up to be a must attend event. Highlights include a great track, three different grandstands to catch all of the action and open pits where you can get up close to all of the drivers for pictures and autographs. Recently added, the Young Dubliners will perform Saturday night after the racing action.

    unnamed 3

It is still early in the season so Utah could produce new contenders for the championship run. We might also see new drivers who moved up classes who are hungry for a win this year leave it all on the track. In short course racing, nothing is guaranteed. A dominant driver one year could struggle the next as evidenced by Kyle Leduc’s performance. Being early in the season still, he has plenty of time to turn that around in Utah.

    unnamed 4

    PRO 4
Former champion Carl Renezeder has found his mojo again and placed himself on the top step of the podium in Round 4 and Bryce Menzies took the honor the round before. There are several other drivers who have been struggling but could win on any given weekend.

    unnamed 8

    PRO 2
Bryce Menzies was stripped of his round three win after a DQ for contact after the checkered flag but came back in Round 4 to let everyone know he is not going away quietly. MacCachren, who took the Round 3 win, had problems in Round 4. RJ Anderson, a new driver to Pro 2, was battling to the end, finishing on the podium on Saturday and just missing out on Sunday. Anderson and MacCachren look to play spoilers for a Menzies Pro 2 championship.

    unnamed 6

    PRO LITE
General Tire driver Jerett Brooks let the rest of the drivers in Pro Lite know that he is a serious contender for the championship in Lake Elsinore sweeping both rounds. Ryan Beat was banging on the door but could not get by Brooks and finished in the second spot both days. Brandon Arthur is another who won’t go out without a fight. He just missed the podium both days.

    unnamed 7

    PRO BUGGY
Taylor Atchison is leading the points after four rounds but there are several racers like Garret George and Mike Valentine who are starting to show some consistency and could be taking over the points lead after Utah. Darren Hardesty will look to ruin the other’s chance at success as he gets his car figured out.

LOORRS Heads West to Lake Elsinore, California

Lucas Oil Off Road Racing heads west to Lake Elsinore, California for Rounds 3 and 4 on April 23-24, after a successful season opener at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona.

    unnamed 5

With the popularity of short course racing growing each season, we are seeing new sponsors and manufacturers getting involved wanting to be included in the wraps on race vehicles. From the thousands of fans on site to the live Internet stream on Lucas Oil TV to the produced tv shows shown a few weeks later, there is a lot of exposure to be had. This influx of sponsors has allowed more racers to get involved and even created multi-vehicle teams.

Most racers are happy to have moved past the first rounds and ready to move on to the next event, any gremlins or new truck blues will usually present themselves early in the season, so as the season moves forward, so will the confidence in the equipment.

    unnamed 4

    PRO 4

Nobody would have guessed that Kyle Leduc would have started off the season with two DNFs after his dominating 2015 season. Carl Renezeder and Rob MacCachren split the top spot for Rounds 1 and 2 with MacCachren taking the opener on Saturday. Eric Baron was able to grab a third place on Saturday with Greg Adler taking third on Sunday. The top qualifier was Leduc, so for him to redeem himself in Lake Elsinore.

    unnamed 3

    PRO 2

Bryce Menzies picked up where he left off last year with a win in the opening round but missed the podium in Round 2. MacCachren got a pair of second places in Arizona, and although those are great results for the start of the season, the veteran racer will be looking for the top step in the next rounds. Brian Deegan closed out the podium with a pair of thirds on the weekend even leading a bunch of laps, a great result for Deegan. As a side note, Menzies spent two weeks of March and April in Abu Dhabi racing a Rally Raid race for Red Bull Mini, maybe in preparation for a possible future Dakar Rally.

    unnamed 2

    PROLITE

Brandon Arthur landed in the top spot on the podium for both Rounds 1 and 2, showing he has not lost any speed in the off-season and that he’s the one to beat moving forward in 2016. Ryan Beat and Jerret Brooks split second places on the weekend and Brad Deberti showed consistency taking third place in both rounds.

    unnamed

    PRO BUGGY

Pro Buggy is going to be the class to watch this year. The class had two different winners, Kevin McCullough and Elliot Watson in the first two rounds with five different drivers on the podium. The only driver to be up on the box both rounds was Sterling Cling with a pair of third place finishes. Garret George and Darren Hardesty each grab second place finishes on the weekend. This class has fresh young drivers hungry for wins this season and to prove themselves worthy of moving up to the truck classes in the coming years.

Getting There Is Half The Work – Dakar Rally 2016- The Odyssey

In desert racing the co-driver’s responsibilities include calling out turns from the GPS, checking mirrors, monitoring gauges, and changing a flat tire or working on a broken race car. While a few top tier teams have dedicated co-drivers, the job more often is an afterthought given to friends or family. Short course “spotters” are even more removed from the situation, calling out turns and traffic from outside of the vehicle. By contrast, top rally raid navigators are paid professionals who are courted by rival teams and drivers. When you look closely you start seeing the same navigators at the top of the rankings each year. (more…)
