King of the Hammers 2012: Event Recap

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

Promises Delivered

2012 marked a year of significant improvements & growth

  • King of the Hammers is now known and respected as the single toughest one  day off-road race in the world and has become the “no miss” event. A full  vendor show complements five stand alone racing events culminating in  Friday’s Griffin King of the Hammers.
  • Hammertown not only became a city in desert, but a full service event venue.
  • Spectators watched the action live from Hammertown via the largest mobile  HD LED jumbotron available and a strategically prepared short course and  hot pit area.
  • Cutting edge live show integrating wireless cameras to a microwave and  satellite feed was tested and successful, paving the way for expanded  future coverage. Online spectators turned out en masse to watch the action. Viewership  quadrupled from 2011.
  • Race day was a success for vendors. Hammertown was no longer a ghost  town on race day, but a major revenue and exposure opportunity for our  partners.
  • Strategic media plan focused on branding KOH and maximizing media beyond  a handful of endemic media outlets.
  • King of the Hammers continues to be a mark of credibility and durability in  automotive and racing. Read More→

Official Scoring Correction-King of the Hammers

Official Scoring Correction Following Competition Review Board Assessment

February 23, 2012 (Lake Arrowhead, CA) – After reviewing comments from the Bureau of Land Management, Course Officials, and competitors; and with support of video coverage, the Competition Review Board (CRB) for the 2012 Griffin King of the Hammers has announced time penalties for seven drivers as a result of an illegal line that afforded both competitive advantage and created increased risk to course workers and spectators.

It was announced at all drivers meetings that drivers must stay in the bottom of the rock canyons, specifically at the entrance of the rock trail known as Chocolate Thunder.  The Bureau of Land Management approved the nearby spectator areas to be inside of the 150’ setback standard based on the natural topography mitigating risk and providing a natural barrier from race car incursion into the spectator area.  By taking the illegal line on the high left side of the rock ‘gatekeeper’ that natural barrier was eliminated and risk was increased.  As such, the seven drivers who took the aforementioned line on Chocolate Thunder will be assessed a 30 minute time penalty added to total elapsed time.

The CRB also deliberated a similar line used just past the gatekeeper but determined that the lack of inherent risk coupled with conflicting instructions given by onsite course workers made assessing a time penalty impractical and punitive.

Hammerking shares with all its competitors the responsibility of maintaining the safest environment possible for all course workers and spectators.  A review is currently underway to determine if there is a more effective way to mark illegal course bypasses and the method which specific course details are communicated.

The Competition Review Board consists of KOH Race Director, Event Director, Tech Inspector, Operations Director, and Driver Liaison.  There will be no further sanctions based on this specific incident. Updated list of official finishers listed below:

The Crown Goes East As Erik Miller Wins the 2012 Griffin King of the HammersFebruary 11, 2012 (Johnson Valley, CA) – On Saturday at at 2:03 p.m., Erik Miller crossed the finish line to be crowned the 2012 King of the Hammers.  Considered the toughest one day off-road race, Miller beat out 134 competitors to win the coveted title and $25,000 prize purse.

“There are one thousand opportunities to make mistakes out there,” Erik Miller explained at the finish line, “and we just try to make as few as possible.”  The humble Miller was describing the secret to his success at the 2012 Griffin King of the Hammers, where he finished the grueling 165-mile race in six hours and three minutes.  “I could not have done this without the help of my friends.  We have been in Johnson Valley for the past twelve days getting ready for this race,” the Maryland resident explained.  Miller is no stranger to success; he was the 2010 International Endurance Champion and came in fifth at last year’s Griffin King of the Hammers.  “I added Fox bypass shocks this year and they really helped me carry speed through the desert,” Miller revealed.   He is the first East Coast competitor to win the prestigious title in the event’s six year history. Traditionally, the Griffin King of the Hammers has been limited to a field of 100 racers; twenty of whom gain entry into the race by competing in a Last Chance Qualifying (LCQ) race that happens in the days prior to the King of the Hammers. More than 70 drivers competed for one of the 20 remaining spots. After the completion of today’s qualifying rounds, both drivers and spectators waited anxiously for news of which teams would move on to the main race and which teams would be packing up their vehicles to start their long journey home. 4WHEEL PARTS QUALIFYING ROUNDS – DAY 2

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

Nelson, Miller, and Gordon Shine on Day 2 of the 2012 Griffin King of the Hammers

4WHEEL PARTS QUALIFYING ROUNDS DAY 2

Nick Nelson laid down a time of 4:46 at Wednesday’s 4Wheel Parts Time Trials, ending up second overall in the two-day qualifier for the Griffin King of the Hammers this Friday, February 10th

Unlike the solid axles used on Mooneyham’s Trick Toys Fabrication race car, Nick Nelson’s buggy from Jimmy’s 4×4 utilizes independent front suspension (IFS) for better compliance at speed.  The brand new, blazing yellow buggy set the fastest time, while most of the field struggled to even finish the course.  Only 55 of 70 starters reached the finishing gates under their own power on Wednesday.  The rest either succumbed to mechanical failure or frayed nerves as thousands of fans cheered them on in person and tens of thousands followed the 4Wheel Parts Time Trials online. King of the Hammers 2012: 4Wheel Parts Qualifying Round Day 1

“Easy Does It” at Tuesday’s 4Wheel Parts Time Trials for the 2012 Griffin King of the HammersFebruary 7, 2012 (Johnson Valley, CA) – Ultra4 veteran “Easy” Rick Mooneyham has something to prove at this year’s Griffin King of the Hammers.  Mooneyham has been on the podium twice in the past, but has yet to be crowned King.  He made his presence known at Tuesday’s 4Wheel Parts Time Trials by laying down the fastest qualifying time, a blistering four minutes and forty one seconds.  The only other sub-five-minute time was achieved by reigning King and Monster Energy driver Shannon Campbell, the last driver on course for the day.  4Wheel Parts president Greg Adler was the first competitor on course and his qualifying time of 5:08 stood for much of the day.  By the time the dust had settled, Mooneyham and Campbell were the only two who bested Adler for starting position in Friday’s Griffin King of the Hammers.   It is interesting to note that Adler was piloting a vehicle originally built at Trick Toys Fabrication by none other than Rick Mooneyham.  Scott Ward drove a third Trick Toys Fabrication buggy to a sixth place qualifying time of 5:24, illustrating the effectiveness of the vehicle design.  Read More→
