The Mint 400 and UTV World Championship to Operate Independently in 2020 and Beyond

Martelli Brothers chart a new path for the future of the two largest desert races in the sport

April 29, 2019 – San Diego, Calif. — The Martelli Brothers announced today The Mint 400 and the UTV World Championship races will be sanctioned and operated independently in 2020 and beyond. The decision comes after nearly a decade of work in the sport as race promoters. Moving forward, their in-house team of off-road industry veterans will manage all aspects of their events including marketing, film and TV content production and race operations.

While The Mint 400 and UTV World Championship will no longer be exclusively part of the Best in the Desert points series, the races will continue to operate on similar dates as previous years, and under similar rules and specs for the race vehicle classes. The Mint 400 will move to Friday and Saturday racing in 2020. Entry fees will remain unchanged for 2020 and an early registration period will begin this summer at a discounted rate. The complete entry fee and payout schedule for both races will be released this summer.

“We’ve had a fantastic relationship with Best in the Desert and we’re grateful for all their hard work. We learned a lot from Casey and we miss him dearly,” said Matt Martelli, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Owner of The Mint 400 and UTV World Championship properties. “Moving forward, we want to implement our ideas and make off-road racing more visible to the world. This sport is dollar-for-dollar the greatest thrill ride on the planet. We have proven our capabilities on the marketing, media, and event management side, now it’s time for us to take control of our future.”

Matt and Josh, who founded the motorsports production group Mad Media in 1995 purchased The Mint 400 in 2011 after producing groundbreaking television coverage of the storied race for several years. They brought the Mint to Casey Folks and his Best in the Desert series shortly after acquiring it, where the event ran for eight years. In that time, the Martelli/BITD team grew the event from a one day race with 200 entries into a four-day off-road festival with 550 entries and two days of racing – making it the largest desert race in North America. The UTV World Championship was developed in house as well in 2014, and has become the Super Bowl of UTV racing for the past five years, boasting over 400 entries in 2019.

“One of the greatest things about off-roading is that it takes you down uncharted roads into new and exciting territory,” said Josh Martelli, Chief Operating Officer and Co-Owner of The Mint 400 and UTV World Championship properties. “That’s exactly what happened with us. When we were asked to cover the Mint in 2010 and again in 2011 we were pumped – and put everything we knew at the time into those TV shows. Eight years later with the help and support of this incredible industry, we’ve grown two events into world class races with the highest level of competition coming from all over the world. But we didn’t do that alone. We are extremely grateful for the support we’ve had along the way and humbled by the feedback from our racers, partners and race fans.”

Bringing race operations in house will allow the Martellis to continue to develop their own race formats, rule book, class specs, timing and scoring system, race courses, and to renew their commitment to driver safety through their own emergency operations program. More details about the move will be published to The Mint 400 and UTVWC websites in the coming months. The Martelli Brothers welcome racers, volunteers, and media to share their ideas and feedback with them by emailing ideas@themint400.com

2019 BFGoodrich Tires Mint 400 Crowns Impressive List of Champions

The Great American Off-Road Race boasts expanded live streaming, two full days of action

Coming off of a 50th anniversary event that was heralded as one of the best in the sport, the BFGoodrich Tires Mint 400 had high expectations to fulfill in 2019. From Wednesday’s parade down the Las Vegas Strip to Monday’s awards brunch in Primm, this year’s event elevated the standards yet again for a premier off-road event in the United States.

541 entries represented a triple-digit jump from last year’s Mint 400, boosted in part by the long-awaited return of motorcycles for the first time since 1976. But of those entries, representing dozens of classes in all disciplines of vehicles, only a handful of champions could be crowned. Those racers included Ricky Brabec, the Dakar Rally front-runner who gave Honda its first-ever motorcycle win at the Mint 400, and Justin Lofton, who became the first-ever three-time Mint 400 overall winner in Unlimited Truck alongside co-driver Derek Balcunas.

“This year’s BFGoodrich Tires Mint 400 week went beyond our wildest expectations,” said Mint 400 CEO Matt Martelli. “It was an incredible event from start to finish, and we couldn’t have done it without the incredible efforts of our entire crew. Congratulations to all of our finishers, and especially this year’s winners, including Justin Lofton, our first-ever three-time overall champion. We’ll see you again in 2020!”

The week began with the annual Ignite CBD Mint 400 Vehicle Parade, where 125 of this year’s entrants headed down the streets of Las Vegas before winding up at Atomic Liquors for the second annual Mint 400 Dinner of Champions. Thursday and Friday saw the Mint 400 Off-Road Festival powered by Rockford Fosgate take over Fremont Street, with an official proclamation from the city renaming the area “Mint 400 Boulevard” for the weekend. From racers going through tech and contingency to hundreds of displays from the foremost companies in off-road, as well as over 25,000 attendees, the event was a testament to the health and strength of the modern off-road industry.

Thursday was especially busy with Time Trials and the Pit Crew Challenge, both of which were supported by Method Race Wheels. The Unlimited Truck team of Jason Voss and Class 6100 team of Terry Householder each took home prizes worth nearly $20,000 for their respective top pit stops, while the midway point of the competition saw Bryce Menzies and Brock Heger announced as the fastest qualifiers on the four-mile time trial course.

Saturday and Sunday would see the action move to Primm and Jean, where a massive presence at the start/finish line and sold-out spectator areas allowed the fans to get up close to the competitors as they battled for the win. Saturday morning’s action saw the motorcycles take on an 80-mile course designed especially for them, while cars, trucks, and UTVs would tackle a 119-mile layout on Saturday afternoon and in two separate Sunday races.

Expanded live coverage was at the forefront of the many initiatives taken on by the Mint 400 team for 2019, and the coverage didn’t disappoint. Between Saturday and Sunday, the Mad Media team produced nearly 18 hours of streaming content, utilizing two dozen live cameras—including two helicopters and two drones—and nearly five dozen GoPros to bring the story of this year’s Great American Off-Road Race to life. From breathtaking live shots of the sport’s fastest vehicles barreling through the desert to studio interviews with event legends and race winners, this year’s live show set a new standard for what can be done with live production in off-road racing.

This year’s Mint 400 inspired a large contingent of big names to compete alongside off-road regulars, from 2009 Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button to two-time UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez. Both were able to take the checkered flag on Sunday, with Velasquez placing second in Class 5500 and Button cracking the top 20 in Class 6100 despite limited testing.

  • Justin Lofton Makes History With Third BFGoodrich Tires Mint 400 Victory

Justin Lofton Makes History With Third BFGoodrich Tires Mint 400 Victory

2015 and 2016 winner takes unofficial 2019 victory by 2:56 over Brett Sourapas

Justin Lofton returned to the top step of the Best in the Desert podium on Sunday afternoon with an impressive victory at the 2019 BFGoodrich Tires Mint 400. Lofton, who bested a field of dozens of the world’s top off-road racers, unofficially became the first driver in history to win three Mint 400s when he wheeled his #41 Unlimited Truck to the finish line. Lofton claimed $35,000 in combined bonuses from BFGoodrich Tires and Fox Shocks for earning the overall victory in this year’s Great American Off-Road Race.

“This is awesome,” Lofton said from atop the podium. “It takes a whole crew, and we’ve got some great partners, and they won this race. These big checks look good in the shop, but we’re going to get ready for the next race after this. We’ve got more races to win!”

Lofton started fourth in the Unlimited Truck field, entering the 119-mile course side by side with 2018 top qualifier Harley Letner to start the feature race. Initially, the entire field was chasing defending Mint 400 winner Bryce Menzies, whose new all-wheel drive truck paced Method Race Wheels Time Trials on Thursday. But Lofton quickly established himself as Menzies’ top rival, and the two traded the race lead multiple times on corrected time during the three-lap race.

However, things unraveled for Menzies on the final lap, beginning with a flat tire and subsequent issues in changing it. That enabled Lofton to take the lead for good, while more trouble for Menzies relegated the Las Vegas native well outside of the podium battle. He wasn’t the only one, though, as 2017 winner Rob MacCachren also punctured a tire after hitting a rock on the final lap while within striking distance of the overall lead.

22-year-old Brett Sourapas, winner of the season-opening Parker 425, drove a consistent and clean race to take second, just two minutes and 56 seconds behind Lofton. Multi-time Best in the Desert champion Jason Voss, still seeking his first Mint 400 win, took third, while Cody Parkhouse followed up on his top qualifying time in Class 1500 by earning the victory on Sunday afternoon as well.

“This year’s BFGoodrich Tires Mint 400 was another spectacular running of the Great American Off-Road Race,” said Mint 400 CEO Matt Martelli. “Congratulations to Justin Lofton on a hard-fought victory, and to all of this year’s class winners and finishers. We’re grateful to all of our sponsors and partners who helped us put together such a terrific celebration of off-road racing, from Wednesday’s parade down the Las Vegas Strip to tonight’s exciting finish to our Unlimited Truck race. We already can’t wait for 2020 as we look to take the Mint 400 to yet another level next year!”

  • Travis Chase Wins BFGoodrich Tires Mint 400 Saturday Afternoon Race

Travis Chase Wins BFGoodrich Tires Mint 400 Saturday Afternoon Race

Will also compete in Class 6100 on Sunday afternoon

Travis Chase kicked off his quest for two class victories at the 2019 BFGoodrich Tires Mint 400 with success on Saturday afternoon. The Chase Motorsports driver and 2017 Class 5000 winner returned to the class for this year’s event and scored the unofficial victory alongside co-driver Jacob Lauxen over runner-up Christian Fessler.

“This was supposed to be a little jaunt around the park!” Chase joked from the podium. “It was tough out there, we were pushing hard, and there were a couple of lead changes. But we persevered, and pushed forward with our plan: push hard, mellow out towards the middle, and push hard again toward the finish. That’s what we did.

“The car was perfect, and we didn’t have to touch this thing all day. We didn’t have one flat. Today was great—everything was phenomenal.”

As he did at the Best in the Desert season-opening Parker 425, Chase plans to pull double duty in Class 5000 and Class 6100 in this year’s Mint 400. The Californian qualified 13th for tomorrow afternoon’s Class 6100 start order during Thursday’s Method Race Wheels Time Trials. He’ll be hoping to have a similar run to this afternoon’s event, where Chase’s advantage grew larger and larger as the race went on.

The first of three car, truck, and UTV races in this weekend’s event saw an even split of three-lap and two-lap classes. Classes 5000, 6000, 1100, 2000, UTV Unlimited, and UTV Sportsman ran three laps each, while nearly a dozen classes ran two laps. Despite losing an alternator on the first lap and having to push their Class 4700 truck off the podium, Bunch Racing was unofficially the top overall finisher in the two-lap race. The 2019 BFGoodrich Tires Mint 400 continues on Sunday with two more races, kicking off at 6AM with seven classes including both premier UTV classes and continuing at 1:30PM with the premier Unlimited Trucks headlining five of the fastest classes in the sport. Fans can watch the official live stream starting at 9:30AM, and follow along with timing and scoring all day long, at themint400.com/live.
