Ryan Arciero Wins Best in the Desert’s Vegas to Reno

King Shocks takes takes seven of the top eight positions overall

    King Shocks Top Overall Finishes:
    1st – #32 Ryan Arciero (07:56:49.109)
    2nd – #6172 Dustin Grabowski (08:08:06.534)
    4th Place – #1575 James Dean (08:10:32.747)
    5th – #97 BJ Baldwin (08:10:54.877)
    6th – #127 Kyle Jergensen (08:12:01.271)
    7th – #24 Adam Householder (08:12:17.527)
    8th – #90 Raul Gomez (08:20:46.684)

It was exactly one year ago, to the race, that Ryan Arciero lost the original Trophy Truck in a fire that ultimately destroyed the vehicle.  After taking hold of a brand new 2WD Herbst-Smith Fabrication truck just a week prior, Arciero drove the truck to a first place finish at one of the most grueling off-road races in America.

With limited testing time, Arciero took a 26th draw for Time Trials and turned it into a 7th place finish at the Time Trials event held in Jean, NV.  Arciero threw down a lap time of 04:39.638, while six King Shocks teammates finished ahead of him including #127 Kyle Jergensen (6th – 04:39.397), #38 Eric Hustead (5th – 04:38.327), #19 Tim Herbst (4th – 04:37.212), #43 Jax Redline (3rd – 04:36.734) and #97 BJ Baldwin (2nd – 04:35.939).

Early on in the race, battles were happening between the frontrunners, including King Shocks teammates #97 BJ Baldwin and #43 Ken Block, who partnered up with Jax Redline to run Vegas to Reno in preparation for the Baja 1000 this fall.  #127 Kyle Jergensen was hot on their tails, while James Dean had an incredible run in his King Shocks equipped Class 1 car.  Dean (08:10:32.747) went on to win Class 1 by 17 minutes over King teammates, #1549 Sam Berri (08:27:51.709) and #1543 Morgan Langley (09:05:58.467).

It wasn’t until later on in the race when Arciero began to creep towards the front, take the race lead around RM 440 and hold off the remaining field for a first place overall finish.
“What a race,” stated Arciero at the finish line.  “The Herbst-Smith Fab team just finished this truck last week and we tested it for the first time last Thursday.  Our King Shocks play an integral role in the overall performance of this truck, and ours were dialed in to take on one of the longest races in our sport at Vegas to Reno. To bring the new truck straight to this race without any issues and bring home the win was a dream come true.”
#6172 Dustin Grabowski had an impeccable run in the 6100 Class.  After starting 5th in class, Grabwoski went on an absolute tear through the field ahead of him and finished an impressive second overall.  The class win, by over fourteen minutes, put Grabowski Brothers Racing back in first place in the BITD Points Championship in Class 6100.
King went on to take seven of the top 10 overall positions, including class wins in Trick Truck, Class 1, Class 6100 and Class 10.  Next up on the calendar is the SCORE-International Baja 400 September 14-19.

  • King Shocks’ Jason Voss Wins His Fourth Vegas to Reno in Five Years

King Shocks’ Jason Voss Wins His Fourth Vegas to Reno in Five Years

King Shocks takes top two podium spots & Class 1 win in the longest race in the United States

With a finishing time of 09:02:42.094, King Shocks’ Jason Voss earned the overall win at the 2017 Best in the Desert Vegas to Reno.  The victory marks his fourth Vegas to Reno overall win in five years and distances himself further ahead in the 2017 overall Best in the Desert points championship.

Kicking off the weekend, King Shocks took seven of the top ten qualifying positions in the time trails event held at the notoriously rough APEX Road.  Full of jumps, g-outs, whoops and overall nasty terrain, APEX weeds through the field and keeps the fastest racers up front.

“It’s always going to be rougher and more challenging qualifying at APEX and that’s how I like it knowing I’m equipped with one of the best trucks out there.  I can’t say enough about King Shocks’ ability that allows me to push its limits.   We were able to earn a third place starting position for race day and muscle our way to the front nearing the halfway point.  From there, we held off Justin Matney for the overall.  Four out of five years ain’t bad!” commented Jason Voss.

After a grueling 550 miles, Voss was first to the finish line in Dayton, NV, followed by King Shocks teammate Justin Matney.  Matney started the race in seventh position and proved that the RPM Off-Road 4WD trick truck has its advantages in a race which winning pace was around 61mph.  At race mile 300, Matney handed the truck off to Josh Daniel, who fell just short of catching Voss in the second half of the race by just +00:03:30.  Vegas to Reno marks the second race in a row in which Matney has missed out on the overall by three minutes.

King Shocks also took the top five spots in Class 1500. #1589 Jon Walker took the class win by nearly four minutes over teammate #1549 Sam Berri.   Youtheory Racing’s Harley Letner finished in third place and will keep his points lead in the overall points championship for Class 1500.

#6107 Steve Kovach destroyed the 6100 field, with second place finisher Carrie Smiley crossing the finish line +00:46:10 than Kovach’s pace.

After a grueling 550 miles, Jason Voss was first to the finish line in Dayton, NV and took home his fourth Vegas to Reno overall win in five years.  Starting from third qualifying position, Voss quickly got out front physically nearing the halfway point and remained in position to take the overall win with a time of 09:02:27.

Second place finisher Justin Matney had one a strong performance in the #4 RPM Off-Road Trick Truck.  Matney split seat time with Josh Daniel, who fell just short of catching Voss in the second half of the race.  The duo’s spectacular performance finished just +00:03:30 off of Voss’ winning pace.

Bryce Menzies finished in third place after an unusually high (nine) amount of flats.  Him & co-driver Pete Mortensen pushed on to secure the final spot on the podium, despite their significant down time.

Many classes are still battling it out in the Nevada desert.  Click here for a full list of unofficial results as the finish.

2017 Race-Dezert BITD Vegas to Reno Coverage

The longest offroad race in America is now officially underway as 54 unlimited vehicles qualified this afternoon to see who would start first at the 2017 Best In The Desert Vegas To Reno race.

BITD setup the qualifying loop out at Apex once again in the same area as The Mint 400 time trials but changed it up a bit on the drivers by giving them a qualifying course with a few sections not used in a few years.

Rob MacCachren was the last driver to qualify as the team had to work on the truck in between the parade lap and his scheduled run. Even though he got the roughest course compared to all the other drivers he would walk away with the pole position finishing with a time of 4 minutes and 58 seconds.
