Josh Blyler earns his first King of the Hammers win with Team Nitto while Erik Miller and Marcos Gomez round out the top three spots at the opening race of the Ultra4 Racing season on Friday, February 7, 2020.
Cypress, Calif. (February 10, 2020) – Nitto Tire U.S.A., a leading manufacturer of off-road and street performance tires, has announced that Team Nitto drivers Josh Blyler, Erik Miller and Marcos Gomez have swept the podium at the 2020 Nitto King of the Hammers race in Johnson Valley, California.
The King of the Hammers race marks the beginning of the 2020 Ultra4 Racing series and is widely regarded as the toughest single-day off-road race in the world with over 212 miles covered in less than 12 hours. In the race’s unlimited 4400 class, the drivers pilot custom race buggies through a course that includes both high speed desert running and highly technical rock crawling. To win, a competitor must display remarkable stamina, skill and have the proper equipment to withstand the rigorous conditions.
2020 marks both Blylers’ first win at King of the Hammers and the second time that Nitto Tire has swept the podium at the King of the Hammers, with the last sweep taking place in 2017. Taking second place was longtime Team Nitto driver and two-time King of the Hammers winner Erik Miller with Nitto Driver Marcos Gomez securing the podium sweep with a third-place finish. All drivers and teams were competing on Nitto’s capable, durable and race-proven Trail Grappler M/T tire.
“The entire team at Nitto Tire is extremely proud of our amazing drivers and their incredible accomplishment at one of the toughest off-road races in the world,” said Chris Corbett, Nitto Tire U.S.A.’s events and motorsports manager. “This race pushes competitors and their rigs to the extreme, so a reliable, durable and race-proven tire like the Nitto Trail Grappler M/T is crucial to success. Speeding through the desert and navigating countless rock obstacles, the right tire is one of the single biggest factors in determining whether or not you end up on top of the podium.”

World-renowned racers, reimagined iconic vehicles, title sponsorship push brand into spotlight
ENSENADA, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO, NOV. 15, 2019 — BFGoodrich® Tires is seeking its 31st overall win at the SCORE Baja 1000. The grueling race pushes the world’s best off-road drivers to their limits and tests equipment in a way no R&D laboratory could.
BFGoodrichhas won 95 SCORE Baja races during the past 40 years and will support a crowded field of contenders who will descend on Ensenada, the desert racing capital of the world, at the end of the month. The brand has a lot to celebrate at this year’s Baja 1000.
BFGoodrich Named Title Sponsor, Offers Contingency Prize
BFGoodrich Tires has been designated the title sponsor of the 2019 SCORE Baja 1000, a testament to the brand’s roots and commitment in the sport.
“For more than four decades the Baja Peninsula has been our real-world testing ground,” said Chris Baker, Motorsports Director for Michelin North America and BFGoodrich Tires. “To be the title sponsor of this race, especially on a year with so much action and an extremely competitive field, is significant.”
In addition to title sponsorship, BFGoodrich is offering a $40,000 contingency prize to the overall winner of the race if they are using BFGoodrich tires. That winner will have a lot to contend with in this year’s course – a rocky, technical 800.5 miles that will put drivers, vehicles and tires through a punishing test.
Defending Champion and Top Hopefuls Race on BFGoodrich Tires
Defending Baja 1000 overall winner and BFGoodrich racer Cameron Steele will compete for a second consecutive Trophy Truck victory in a Team C Mason all-wheel drive trophy truck with Ricky Johnson. He will find tough competition in Ryan Arciero, who has the top starting position after an overall win on BFGoodrich tires at the SCORE Baja 400 in September. BFGoodrich veteran and four-time Baja 1000 winner Rob MacCachren is always a threat and will be joined by Justin ‘Bean’ Smith in this year’s race.
Eight well-known champions from other motorsports disciplines are racing in the Baja 1000 this year on BFGoodrich tires. This list includes:
Nasser Al-Attiyah, Dakar Rally overall winner, FIA Cross Country Rally Cup champion, FIA WRC-2 World champion, Middle East Rally champion, Olympic medalist in skeet shooting
Chris Buncombe – 24 Hours of Le Mans LMP2 class winner, Blancpain Endurance GT Pro-Am champion
Jenson Button, Formula One World Champion, Japanese Super GT champion, British F3 champion, British Formula Ford champion
Brendan Gaughan, NASCAR Xfinity and truck series race winner
Ricky Johnson, AMA National Motocross champion, AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, Motorsports Hall of Fame of America inductee
Justin Lofton, ARCA Champion, NASCAR truck series winner
Toby Price, Dakar Rally motorcycle class winner, Australian Off-Road Championship winner
“To see these internationally known names in motorsports testing their skills and endurance in the Baja 1000, and to see them choosing to use BFGoodrich tires, says a lot about the allure of this iconic race and the legacy of the BFGoodrich brand in this sport,” Baker said.
Ford Bronco and Baja Boot Reimagined on BFGoodrich tires
The recently revealed Ford Bronco R race truck, which made its debut in early November, will race in the Baja 1000, 50 years after desert racing legends Rod Hall and Larry Minor won the 1969 Baja 1000 in a Ford Bronco. The modern take on the Bronco will be driven by several notable drivers including Rod Hall’s granddaughter Shelby Hall, Cameron Steele, Jason Scherer, Steve Olliges, Brad Lovell and Curt Leduc. The Bronco R will race on 37-inch BFGoodrich® All-Terrain KDR2+® tires.
This year’s race also features a reimagining of the legendary “Baja Boot” raced in Baja by Steve McQueen and other desert racing pioneers in the 1960s. Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus (SCG) will debut the 21st century interpretation of the iconic Boot in the Baja 1000. The unique vehicle can overcome the toughest off-road obstacles on the course but is also designed to be street legal. SCG selected 37-inch BFGoodrich® Baja T/A KR2® tires for the race.
BFGoodrich Provides Extensive Pit Support
The brand’s support and dedication to the Baja 1000 goes far beyond title sponsorship. Perhaps more famous than any partnerships or desert racing technology is the unparalleled support BFGoodrich provides for desert racers.
The BFGoodrich pit and radio relay network set up at every SCORE desert race, including this year’s Baja 1000, provides teams free support including fueling, vehicle welding, tire changes, mechanical repair and water. The only requirement teams need to have access to this support network is to race on BFGoodrich tires at all SCORE races. For this year’s race, six pits are strategically set up along the course to support race teams.

Martelli Brothers chart a new path for the future of the two largest desert races in the sport
April 29, 2019 – San Diego, Calif. — The Martelli Brothers announced today The Mint 400 and the UTV World Championship races will be sanctioned and operated independently in 2020 and beyond. The decision comes after nearly a decade of work in the sport as race promoters. Moving forward, their in-house team of off-road industry veterans will manage all aspects of their events including marketing, film and TV content production and race operations.
While The Mint 400 and UTV World Championship will no longer be exclusively part of the Best in the Desert points series, the races will continue to operate on similar dates as previous years, and under similar rules and specs for the race vehicle classes. The Mint 400 will move to Friday and Saturday racing in 2020. Entry fees will remain unchanged for 2020 and an early registration period will begin this summer at a discounted rate. The complete entry fee and payout schedule for both races will be released this summer.
“We’ve had a fantastic relationship with Best in the Desert and we’re grateful for all their hard work. We learned a lot from Casey and we miss him dearly,” said Matt Martelli, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Owner of The Mint 400 and UTV World Championship properties. “Moving forward, we want to implement our ideas and make off-road racing more visible to the world. This sport is dollar-for-dollar the greatest thrill ride on the planet. We have proven our capabilities on the marketing, media, and event management side, now it’s time for us to take control of our future.”
Matt and Josh, who founded the motorsports production group Mad Media in 1995 purchased The Mint 400 in 2011 after producing groundbreaking television coverage of the storied race for several years. They brought the Mint to Casey Folks and his Best in the Desert series shortly after acquiring it, where the event ran for eight years. In that time, the Martelli/BITD team grew the event from a one day race with 200 entries into a four-day off-road festival with 550 entries and two days of racing – making it the largest desert race in North America. The UTV World Championship was developed in house as well in 2014, and has become the Super Bowl of UTV racing for the past five years, boasting over 400 entries in 2019.
“One of the greatest things about off-roading is that it takes you down uncharted roads into new and exciting territory,” said Josh Martelli, Chief Operating Officer and Co-Owner of The Mint 400 and UTV World Championship properties. “That’s exactly what happened with us. When we were asked to cover the Mint in 2010 and again in 2011 we were pumped – and put everything we knew at the time into those TV shows. Eight years later with the help and support of this incredible industry, we’ve grown two events into world class races with the highest level of competition coming from all over the world. But we didn’t do that alone. We are extremely grateful for the support we’ve had along the way and humbled by the feedback from our racers, partners and race fans.”
Bringing race operations in house will allow the Martellis to continue to develop their own race formats, rule book, class specs, timing and scoring system, race courses, and to renew their commitment to driver safety through their own emergency operations program. More details about the move will be published to The Mint 400 and UTVWC websites in the coming months. The Martelli Brothers welcome racers, volunteers, and media to share their ideas and feedback with them by emailing ideas@themint400.com.
